today the weather forced people to talk about it. "it's so cold!" everyone exclaimed.

one friend said, "i'm breaking up with winter. i can't stand this."

the car heater ran full blast and could only make the air bearable, not warm. snow on top of icy roads made my tires spin.

on the tv, the meteorologists repeated, "it's bitter. it's dangerously cold. don't go out in it if you can help it."

we went out in it.

at the christmas play, the children sang about the true spirit of the season. the boy with glasses wearing the paper snowman costume couldn't stop himself from dancing. the soldier boy wearing a gold-trimmed high schooler's band jacket put the three-foot candy cane on his head and sang along with the chorus. little girls in red velvet dresses twirled and jumped and looked at their black patent shoes.

we drove home through the frozen night. i saw christmas lights shining against the darkness, houses glowing warm
against the cold.
